Author Interview- Arvind Narsima

Today I am interviewing one of the most popular authors now, Arving Narsima who has shot to fame with his debut novel : The Investigator Series- Arya a New Beginning.

1. Sir, what is writing to you?
It’s definitely a soulful passion and my profession too. I find great solace when I write. It has started to define me now.

2. Tell us something about your childhood and your background.
We were very wealthy till my 9th birthday. I had a great childhood until then. My dad had a carpet factory in Kollegal, near Mysore. We had everything money could have possibly bought. But life took a drastic twist and we eventually came back to Pondicherry having lost everything. Then my dad left us. My mom worked as a day labor to make the ends meet and raise my brother and myself. Meanwhile she finished her BA and then became a teacher. God helped me join Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya where boarding, lodging, education and everything else was free. It came as a great blessing for us. I was young and I did not understand poverty then. My mom and brother were the worst affected. When I came out of JNV after higher secondary, the reality struck me. I took to working since then. I have seen all the ugly faces of life. Since I never let go of God at any juncture, he has shown us better a way. But then, it was a long gruesome path.
3. Who was the inspiration for The Investigator series?
I love adventure and police stories. Be it a book or a movie I always look out for thrilling stories. Although I got inspired watching the TV series – ‘The Mentalist’, I started writing after I read Amish Tripati’s ‘Immortals of meluha’.
4. Do you ever get a Writer's block? If yes, how do you overcome it?
Always! My schedules are so erratic and hectic. I don’t get much time for writing. I sit with my characters and plots after 11 pm till 4 am. I try to keep my cool listening to songs. The unusual silence of early mornings help in clearing the fog in my over working mind.
5. As a young child, what did you want to be?
My ambitions were always dictated by my parents. They wanted me to become a Doctor but I had always wanted to be an English Professor. Unfortunately I could become none of the two.

6. Have you read Sherlock Holmes? If yes, what do you like about it?
Sherlock Holmes stories are my all time favorite. I’ve in fact written about this in my 2nd book. I love Conan Doyle’s practical investigations and conventional dexterity over Fleming’s 007’s glitzy portrayal. My hero, Arya, sometimes do resemble Holmes. Moreover I’m a fan of Actor Robert Downey Jr who plays the role of Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s films.
7. What does your family think about your writing?
Well, they are all so excited. My wife is on cloud 9 (just as me) and my daughter shows my book to all her little friends. My mom cried when I gave her the first copy for blessing. My brother and his daughters are proud. God has given me so much popularity and happiness, how can I possibly thank him for his condescension!
8. Tell us something about yourself that we don't know.
Apart from writing or reading, I cook well, I can paint and sing too. I’m particularly interested in blood donating. I’ve donated more than 10 times till now.

9. Who is your favorite author?
I can’t particularly mention one author as my favorite. In fact I have quite a list. But Clive Cussler & Robert  Ludlum top the foreigner’s list. Amish Tripati & Chetan Bhagat top the Indian list.
10. Ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
Ha Ha Ha…ten years from now? Well, as a world renowned writer, maybe in Zurich!
